A Pressure Transmitter is usually a stand-alone component that comprises a Pressure or Force Sensor apart from other elements, required for a particular measuring environment. The measured values are usually displayed on a digital display.
A Pressure Sensor usually converts mechanical pressure into an analog or a digital electric signal. Pressure impacts a Pressure Sensor as a force on a piezoresistive material which stretches or shrinks according to the pressure applied. That results in a changed resistance of the material. The pressure value is transmitted as an electric signal to a control device or a display of a Pressure Transmitter.

The main purpose of a Pressure Transmitter is the conversion of one form of energy to another (e.g. electrical, chemical, mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic). A pressure or force change can be an indication of various changes in the environment, and is therefore useful as a warning signal – an alarm in case that a certain preset threshold has been exceeded. It is substantially used as a detection tool in firefighting, furnace, negative fan pressure and many other applications. When it is directly integrated into a motherboard it can be used within a gas analyzer and other medical equipment.
A Pressure Transmitter can also be used for level measurement (as shown on the figure below) since the hydrostatic pressure at the measuring point is independent on the shape of volume of the vessel but only proportional to the filling height. It should always be placed below the bottom level of the tank for which the level is measured. The level measurement is not affected by the liquid pressure or temperature.
The characteristics of a Pressure Transmitter are selected based on the intended purpose, e.g. environmental conditions such as the temperature and pressure range, humidity, sensitivity required, size, the type of the output signal (current, voltage, digital).
